Kitley’s Crypt [Official Website]

I Bid You Welcome …

My name is Jon Kitley and I am your host, as well as the owner/operator of Kitley’s Krypt. I have been a horror fan most of my life, starting at the age of six watching Ghost Story and Circle of Fear on TV in the early ’70s, and continues to this day.

I started to take my life as a horror fan serious in the early ’80s, wanting to know as much about the genre as I could, and watch as many movies as I could find. The deeper I got, the more I realized that I wanted to share my experiences with other like-minded fans, discussing these favorites and recently discovered titles, hoping they follow me on my journey.

I started Kitley’s Krypt in 1998, where you can read a more detailed history of that in the Kryptic History page.

I have been a staff writer for HorrorHound magazine since 2009, doing several retrospectives from the classics like Frankenstein and The Invisible Man, to The Fly series and The Thing, as well as my Rondo Award winning column, They Came from the Krypt.

My work has also appeared in Evilspeak magazine, as well as in the books Horror 101: The A-List of Horror Films and Monster Movies, Hidden Horror, When Animals Attack, and Strange Blood. My first book, Discover the Horror, came out in July of 2019.

I have also appeared in several documentaries, such as Monster Madness: The Golden Age of the Horror Film, Monster Madness: The Gothic Revival of Horror, and Fanex Files: Hammer Films, as well as in Shout Factory’s Horror Hunters!

Throughout the year, you’ll be able to find me at a number of different movie conventions, 24-hour movie marathons, and at the Drive-Ins!

Horror Films We Only Watch for the Nudity [Horror Land]

We are all adults here right? So, we can admit that a certain amount of enjoyment in horror comes from more liberated views on sex and nudity. Friday the 13th just would not be the same movie if you took out all the nude teens. Jason literally drowned because a couple of hormonal teens could not keep it in their pants long enough to keep an eye on the kids. Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and even the Hellraiser series are all films that feature a hefty amount of sex, and it’s hard to imagine these films without it. You’re more than likely to see nudity in Horror than you are in an action, sci-fi or fantasy film, and it’s one of the very few medium in which it is acceptable to see mature content. However, sometimes even Horror can go a little OTT on the nudity, and the movies sexual content ends up being the best thing about the film. So here is our list that showcase films that explored sex more than horror. Here are some Films We Only Watch for The Nudity.

More Horror Films We Only Watch for the Nudity [Horror Land]

We are all adults here right? We can admit that we like a bit of “hanky panky” thrown in with our slashing and hacking. Like a beautiful sunset painted on landscape, a tiny smidgen of nudity can really help to enhance our enjoyment of a film. However, there are plenty of films out there that may have been a little heavy handed with the their paint brushes. Yep, the films on this list have many things going for them, but if they don’t jiggly, your probably not paying attention. Here are More Horror Films we Only Watch for the Nudity.

Ranking Every Episode In Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities [Horror Obsessive]

Hot take: I am not a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro. His work is not terrible by any means, but there seems to be a disconnect between the ideas in his head and how he projects those images on screen. He is without a doubt a competent director, I just find it difficult to fully enjoy the overwhelming majority of films he creates. The one constant of del Toro I have always enjoyed was his writing. Whether you like him or not you cannot deny he is one hell of a writer and has one messed up brain. When I heard he was creating an anthology series for Netflix I was excited yet trepidatious. When I heard the series was going to be directed by some of the biggest names in horror with del Toro as an executive producer? Well, I was definitely on board.

The Best Shot-On-Video Films [Bleeding Skull]

Every film is a travelogue. From Douglas Sirk’s Technicolor melodramas to Doris Wishman’s paperback gutter-noirs, all movies are mini-vacations that enable us to escape the real world and revitalize our souls. But out of the billions of movies in existence, very few allow us to step off the planet and reach a new plane of consciousness. Thankfully, 50 of those films are gathered here. This list honors our favorite shot-on-video (SOV) mind warps from all realities and centuries. Over the years, people have used “SOV” to describe any movie that was made for the price of a used car or released direct-to-VHS, even if it was shot on film. So, let’s be clear: this list is pure. We’ve only included genre films that were actually shot and edited on tape. This means you won’t find movies that were shot on Super 8 or 16mm and edited on tape (Things, Truth or Dare?: A Critical Madness, respectively). But you will find gore-soaked wizard battles, senior citizen auteurs, and enough Karobics (karate + aerobics) montages to last a lifetime. These films are outsider miracles that erupted from the depths to subvert reality and destroy expectations. Each and every movie on this list belongs in a museum. But until that happens, prepare to step off the planet . . . and hopefully never return.

M R James' Canon Alberic's Scrap-book – A 5 Minute Summary and Literary Analysis [Oldstyle Tales]

Commonly rated among the top ten of James’ stories by his admirers, “Canon Alberic’s Scrap-Book” stands out as having many of the great tropes of what has come to be called a “Jamesian” tale: it follows a starchy English academic on an ill-fated holiday to a remote, backwards town (far from the Hobbit-esque comforts and required civility of Cambridge) where he is hopelessly drawn in by the allure of a sinister antique which brings with it a spectral guardian – eager to make his acquaintance.
