2. Saturn Devouring His Son — Francisco Goya (1819–1823)
There are paintings that are unsettling.
Then there is Saturn Devouring His Son.
Part of Francisco Goya's infamous Black Paintings, this work depicts the Roman god Saturn consuming the body of his child.
And Goya did not exactly approach the subject with subtlety.
The monstrous expression, wild eyes, darkness, and brutality of the image make it one of the most disturbing paintings in Western art.
It's also a perfect example of how horror can work without needing traditional monsters. Saturn himself becomes the monster.
The painting essentially asks:
What if your own father was the thing you needed to escape?
Suddenly family reunions don't seem so bad.
