7. The Hour of Death — Alfred Kubin (1903)
Alfred Kubin was practically born to create nightmare imagery.
His illustrations and paintings frequently explored death, madness, grotesque creatures, sexuality, despair, and the darker corners of the human imagination.
Kubin's work feels remarkably modern despite being created during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
His strange figures and shadowy compositions could easily have inspired the visual design of a horror video game.
If you're unfamiliar with Kubin, exploring his artwork is like opening a door labeled:
"Definitely Don't Go In Here."
Naturally, horror fans are going in.
