When the Suburb Falls Silent
There is something wonderfully appropriate about ending Halloween with a poem like this.
The decorations come down.
The candy disappears.
The costumes go back into the closet.
The jack-o'-lanterns begin their inevitable descent into pumpkin-related decomposition.
And eventually, the neighbourhood becomes quiet again.
But Lovecraft gives us another possibility.
Maybe the darkness was never empty.
Maybe the dead were always there.
Maybe the landscape remembers things we don't.
And maybe, somewhere beyond the moonlight, something ancient is still watching.
Of course, there's probably nothing to worry about.
It's only Halloween.
Probably.
