Why This Little Poem Works So Well
What makes “Hallowe’en in a Suburb” particularly effective is its economy.
Lovecraft doesn't need a lengthy story.
He doesn't need a protagonist.
He doesn't need dialogue.
He doesn't even need to explain everything.
Instead, he gives us images.
Moonlight.
Steeples.
Trees.
Vampires.
Harpies.
Dead villagers.
Fields.
Headstones.
Ghouls.
Spectral powers.
Cosmic forces.
And finally, the hounds of Time.
The result is less like a traditional narrative and more like a series of increasingly disturbing Halloween visions.
And that's exactly what makes it work.
