Welcome to Spooky Month
Welcome to Spooky Month

The calendar says October 1st, which means normal life is officially suspended until November.

There are 12 months in a year.

Eleven of them are basically filler.

Then October shows up wearing a cape, carrying a pumpkin, and immediately starts rearranging the furniture.

WELCOME TO SPOOKY MONTH.

Yes, it is finally October 1st. The greatest month of the year has arrived, and somewhere right now, a skeleton is being dragged out of a storage box while someone argues over whether putting up Halloween decorations this early is "too soon."

It isn't.

It's October.

The rules have changed.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Fear

For horror fans, October isn't really a month.

It's a lifestyle choice.

Suddenly, watching horror movies every night doesn't seem excessive. Playing horror games until 2:00 in the morning becomes "seasonal." Reading scary stories before bed becomes perfectly reasonable.

And if you spend an entire Saturday watching old horror movies while eating an irresponsible amount of Halloween candy?

That's not laziness.

That's cultural participation.

October gives us permission to embrace everything creepy, weird, strange, supernatural, disturbing, ridiculous and occasionally held together by duct tape.

And that's exactly what we intend to do here at THE HORROR STREAM LIVE.

The Great Spooky Migration Has Begun

You can always tell when October arrives.

The pumpkins appear.

The decorations come out.

Halloween merchandise suddenly occupies approximately 94% of store shelves.

People who haven't watched a horror movie since last October suddenly become experts on the genre.

And somewhere, someone is already complaining that Christmas decorations are appearing too early.

We don't have time for that.

WE HAVE SPOOKING TO DO.

October is the month when horror gets to take over everything.

Movies.

Games.

Books.

Comics.

Music.

Podcasts.

Web series.

Art.

Fiction.

YouTube channels.

Indie projects.

And all the wonderfully strange creations being made by people who apparently looked at the concept of "normal entertainment" and decided it wasn't for them.

Those are our people.

October Is for the Weird Stuff

One of the best things about horror is that it doesn't have to look a certain way.

You can have a haunted house.

A cursed video game.

A creature lurking in the woods.

A vampire with terrible fashion sense.

A podcast about something scratching underneath someone's basement.

A short story that makes you afraid to turn off the lights.

A comic featuring an impossibly long-limbed nightmare creature.

A song that sounds like it was recorded inside a haunted arcade.

Or an indie horror project made by three people, a laptop, and approximately seventeen cups of coffee.

If it scares you, creeps you out, makes you laugh nervously, or makes you check the hallway twice before going to bed, we're interested.

That's the beauty of horror.

There are no shortage of ways to be terrified.

Humanity has been incredibly creative about this.

The Annual, I'll Just Watch One, Lie

October also brings one of horror's most dangerous traditions:

"I'll just watch one."

You know how this works.

You put on one horror movie.

Then another.

Then you discover a movie you haven't seen in years.

Then you start watching interviews with the director.

Then you're looking up behind-the-scenes trivia.

Then you're watching a 47-minute video essay about a character who appears for approximately six minutes.

Suddenly it's 3:18 in the morning.

You're sitting in complete darkness.

Your television is displaying the words:

ARE YOU STILL WATCHING?

And you're forced to admit that Netflix has become concerned about your welfare.

This is fine.

October understands.

The Annual Halloween Decoration Escalation

Then there are the decorations.

It starts innocently enough.

One pumpkin.

Maybe a little skeleton.

Perhaps a spiderweb.

Then somebody says:

"We could put something in the window."

Famous last words.

Before you know it, the front yard contains enough skeletons to qualify as an archaeological dig.

There are ghosts hanging from trees.

A cemetery has appeared where the flower garden used to be.

Something with glowing red eyes is staring at the neighbors.

And you're standing on a ladder at 11:47 PM wondering how your life reached this point.

The answer is October.

October made you do it.

And Then There Is Halloween

Of course, everything builds toward the big night.

October 31st.

The night when children roam the streets demanding candy with the confidence of organized crime.

The night when adults suddenly become extremely invested in pumpkin carving.

The night when horror fans finally get to say:

"This is what I've been training for."

But here's the thing:

You don't have to wait until Halloween to enjoy Halloween.

That's what Spooky Month is all about.

October 1st through October 31st is one giant horror festival.

There are 31 days to watch something terrifying, discover something new, support an indie creator, read a creepy story, play a horror game, listen to a sinister song, find a strange comic, explore a bizarre podcast or simply sit in the dark and wonder why you heard a noise from the basement.

And if you don't have a basement?

Congratulations.

You're already ahead of the horror protagonists.

So What Are We Doing This Month?

Around here, we're celebrating all of it.

Because THE HORROR STREAM LIVE isn't just about horror movies.

Movies may be one of the biggest parts of the horror world, but horror has escaped the cinema a long time ago.

It's everywhere.

We're talking games, books, comics, music, podcasts, web series, art, fiction, creators and all kinds of wonderfully terrifying indie creations.

October is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the people making those things.

Especially the smaller creators.

The weird projects.

The ambitious projects.

The projects that don't have enormous studios, gigantic marketing budgets or an army of people telling them what they're allowed to make.

Sometimes the best horror you'll discover this month is something you've never heard of.

And that's half the fun.

A Public Service Announcement for Horror Fans

As a public service, we would like to remind everyone of the following important October rules:

Rule #1: You may watch horror whenever you want.

Rule #2: You are legally required to consume at least an unreasonable amount of Halloween candy.

Rule #3: If you hear something in the basement, don't investigate it.

Rule #4: If your friend says, "We should split up," you are no longer friends.

Rule #5: If an abandoned building has a sign saying "KEEP OUT," believe the sign.

Rule #6: If someone hands you an ancient book bound in human skin, maybe don't read it.

Rule #7: If you find a mysterious VHS tape labeled simply "DO NOT WATCH," congratulations. You have discovered the plot.

Rule #8: If something starts whispering your name from inside the walls, moving is perfectly acceptable.

Rule #9: There is no such thing as too much Halloween.

Rule #10: Most importantly, have fun.

Let the Spookiness Commence

So welcome to October.

Welcome to creepy stories.

Welcome to haunted houses.

Welcome to monsters.

Welcome to ghosts.

Welcome to slashers, demons, vampires, zombies, witches, cults, cursed objects, things in the woods and things that probably shouldn't have been summoned in the first place.

Welcome to horror games that make you scream at your monitor.

Welcome to books that make you suspicious of the darkness outside your bedroom window.

Welcome to movies that make you sleep with the lights on.

Welcome to music that sounds like it was composed by something living beneath an abandoned carnival.

Welcome to indie creators doing wonderfully strange things.

Welcome to Halloween.

Welcome to Spooky Month.

The pumpkins are out.

The skeletons are awake.

The monsters are stretching.

The candy aisle is dangerously tempting.

And somewhere, right now, a horror protagonist is making the terrible decision to investigate a strange noise.

Again.

We know how this ends.

But that's okay.

Because it's October.

And we've got an entire month of horror ahead of us.

Halloween Drawing 10

The Monster Has Arrived

There are plenty of months to be sensible.

October isn't one of them.

So turn down the lights.

Put on something creepy.

Fire up that horror game.

Open that scary book.

Find an indie creator you've never heard of.

Watch something that makes you question your life choices.

And if something scratches at your window tonight?

Don't worry.

It's probably just the wind.

Probably.

Happy October 1st, horror fans.

LET SPOOKY MONTH BEGIN.

This October is giving us 5 weekends to experience as much fright, fear and fun as we possibly can. I started October 1st with a horror banger (not the sexual kind, well... sort of) of epic proportions! Review of that coming very soon. This spooky month I'm opening my dark soul to new terror and horror experiences in any and all ways, breaking my normal chains of comfort to douse myself with new and unique haunting experiences. Tonight Oct. 2nd, I get to experience The Shining on the theater big screen for the first time! I will make this month more memorable than any before, I hope you guys do too.
