1. Society (1989)
Let's start with one of the most gloriously insane films ever made.
Society begins like a fairly conventional story about a wealthy Beverly Hills teenager who becomes suspicious that something isn't quite right about his family and the upper-class society surrounding him.
So far, so normal.
Then the movie eventually reveals what is really going on.
And let's just say that “wealthy people behaving badly” doesn't begin to describe it.
Directed by Brian Yuzna, Society gradually transforms from teenage paranoia into one of the most bizarre body-horror experiences of the 1980s.
The film's infamous finale is the kind of sequence that permanently occupies real estate in your brain.
It's grotesque.
It's ridiculous.
It's horrifying.
And somehow, it's also a rather pointed piece of social satire.
Society feels like someone took a suburban teen drama, poured several gallons of nightmare fuel into it, and yelled, “ROLL CAMERA!”
