3. Scream — The Movie That Almost Became Something Else
Scream feels like one of those movies that arrived fully formed.
It didn't.
Kevin Williamson's screenplay was already clever, self-aware and packed with horror references, but the production went through plenty of changes before the movie reached theaters.
Even the identity of Ghostface was carefully protected during production.
And that's important because Scream depends on the audience constantly wondering:
Who is under that mask?
The movie also went through casting considerations that could have dramatically altered its personality.
Imagine someone else playing Sidney.
Imagine someone else playing Dewey.
Imagine someone else playing Gale.
Suddenly the entire movie feels different.
The biggest miracle may be that the final combination of actors, script and direction created something that felt simultaneously like a genuine slasher and a parody of slasher conventions.
It wasn't just another horror movie.
It was a horror movie that looked at horror movies and said:
“You know we're all aware of what we're doing, right?”
