6. Hellraiser — Clive Barker's Monster Movie Almost Had a Different Face
Clive Barker's Hellraiser was based on Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart, but bringing it to the screen required changes.
One of the most significant was the role of the Cenobites.
In the finished film, Pinhead became an instantly recognizable horror icon.
But here's the funny thing:
Pinhead wasn't originally supposed to be the star.
He was one of several Cenobites.
The movie's story was much more focused on Frank, Julia and the horrific consequences of the puzzle box.
Then audiences discovered something interesting.
They really liked the terrifying guy with the pins in his head.
Hollywood, naturally, responded with:
“Excellent. Make him the franchise.”
And thus Pinhead went from mysterious nightmare creature to horror celebrity.
Eventually, he got sequels, comics, video games and approximately 47 million opportunities to say something ominous while standing very still.
