8. Child's Play — Chucky Was Almost a Very Different Kind of Creepy
Before Chucky became the foul-mouthed murder machine we know and love, Child's Play went through some major conceptual changes.
The original concept was considerably different.
Early versions of the story involved a doll with a much different relationship to its human victim, and the mechanics of how the doll became murderous evolved during development.
The final movie gives us Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the Good Guy doll.
And suddenly America's children had a new nightmare:
What if your favorite toy actually hated you?
The Good Guy doll itself is brilliant because it's supposed to be wholesome.
It's essentially the fictional equivalent of a popular children's toy.
Then Chucky comes along and starts murdering people.
It's difficult to imagine the advertising meeting.
“It's a doll!”
“Great!”
“It kills people.”
“Less great.”
