The Blood Test Scene Is Paranoia Perfected
One of the greatest scenes in The Thing involves MacReady's blood test.
By this point, the characters have become so suspicious of one another that they need a way to determine who is infected.
The test seems simple.
If the blood reacts to the alien organism, that person isn't human.
The brilliance of the scene is that the audience has already been infected with the same paranoia as the characters.
We're looking at every character differently.
Who is acting strangely?
Who disappeared?
Who could have been infected?
Who is lying?
Who is hiding something?
And then the test begins.
The tension isn't coming from the creature chasing someone down a hallway.
It's coming from the possibility that the person standing beside you might suddenly reveal itself as the monster.
That's an incredibly powerful horror concept.
