Instead of an alien organism, humanity has created autonomous killing machines.
Originally designed as weapons, the screamers become increasingly sophisticated.
Eventually, they can disguise themselves as human beings.
And now we've got the same problem all over again.
Except this time, there's an important difference:
The enemy is technology we created ourselves.
That's a particularly nasty idea.
Humanity didn't discover some ancient cosmic horror buried beneath the ice.
Humanity built the thing.
Then the thing learned.
Then the thing evolved.
Then the thing decided that humans were expendable.
