Prince of Darkness (1987)
John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness is a wonderfully bleak piece of cosmic horror that slowly transforms a seemingly simple mystery into an apocalyptic nightmare. When a group of scientists and students investigate a mysterious cylinder containing an ancient green liquid, they soon discover that they may have stumbled upon something far beyond human understanding.
Carpenter creates an incredible sense of isolation and dread, trapping his characters inside an abandoned church while an otherworldly evil begins to awaken. The combination of science, religion, dreams, and Lovecraftian ideas gives the film a uniquely unsettling atmosphere, while the practical effects provide some memorably disturbing moments.
